Each year the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) gives ordinary citizens a special opportunity to compete like professionals and help a worthy cause by competing in the National Kidney Foundation Golf Classic. The 2008 Golf Classic is being held in several Michigan cities including Ann Arbor, Clarkston, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Northville.
NKFM’s Golf Classic is designed for four-person, amateur teams who compete in an 18-hole, scramble-style tournament. To be eligible, a team must consist of four players whose USGA Handicap Indexes total 42.0 or more. Only one golfer from each team may have a USGA Handicap Index of 8.0 or less.
• Play like the Pros
Despite its accessibility to amateur golfers, NKFM’s Golf Classic is
not your ordinary charity event. Each year, thousands of golfers from
across the country compete for the grand prize—a chance to play in the
Golf Classic National Finals at The Pebble Beach Resorts in California.
The National Championship is a four-day tournament conducted over the
famed Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills
and Del Monte. If the U.S. Open or the U.S. Amateur are not in your
future, this is your only chance to compete for a National Championship
at Pebble Beach.
• Local Pride
Last year, a foursome consisting of players from Bloomfield Hills,
Waterford, Rochester Hills and Clarkston placed third out of 80 teams
in the National Championship after winning the Golf Classic at the
Oakhurst Golf and Country Club in Clarkston. Placing sixth in the
championship was a team who won the Jerry Klisz Memorial Golf Classic
at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville.
• Win Great Prizes
Prizes and gifts include high quality drivers, putters, golf apparel,
shoes and shoe bags, travel and staff bags, golf balls, golf gloves,
framed memorabilia and more. On-course prizes are awarded for longest
drive, closet to the pin, and for the winners of the team putting
contest. In addition to an invitation to the National Championship,
each member of the winning team receives an air travel certificate. All
participating golfers receive Golf Classic premium gifts including a
golf shirt, hat and other specialty items.
• Play for a Purpose
All proceeds from NKFM’s Golf Classic go toward the programs and
services of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan. NKFM helps more
people in the prevention and treatment of kidney and urinary tract
diseases than any other voluntary health agency. One in eight Michigan
adults has chronic kidney disease and most don’t even know it. In
Michigan, there are more than 12,000 people on dialysis and over 2,500
who are waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant.
• Golf in Your Town
On August 4, Ann Arbor residents can compete in the Golf Classic at the
Barton Hills Country Club. The Jerry Klisz Memorial Golf Classic will
be held August 18 at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville. To
sign up for either of these events or for more information, call (800)
482-1455 or visit www.nkfm.org.
