PORTAGE, MI - The concluding 18 holes of medal play for the 97th Michigan Amateur Championship conducted by the Golf Association of Michigan was played under partly sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 60’s and the winds fluky but calmer than the during the previous days' round.

That helped lower the scoring somewhat as the 156-man field competed for the 64 spots of match play which will begin early Thursday morning.

Individual low honors were shared by Brian Hayward of Grand Rapids and Randy Hutchison of Traverse City. They share the co-medalist honors and their names will be engraved on the Chuck Kocsis trophy – the oldest golf trophy in the state of Michigan. Both Hayward and Hutchison scored144 for the two days with each having one round under par and one over par by one shot; par being 72. A threesome followed at 145 and included Matt Malloure (Farmington Hills), Mark Schoenborn (Grand Rapids) and Tom Werkmeister (Kentwood).

At the conclusion of medal play, ten players tied at 157 and went to a sudden death playoff for the remaining four spots.

Past champions in the match play field of 64 include John Lindholm (1997) and Greg Davies (2006).

There will be 32 matches Thursday morning and the winners will move to the 16 matches in the afternoon.

Ironically, last year’s medalist, Brian Ottenweller from Grand Rapids survived the playoff and will be the 64th seed .

By dusk tomorrow, there will be just 16 contestants left for the quarterfinals on Friday.
