Golf Broadens Horizons for Inner-City Michigan Youth
The Midnight Golf Program, now in its sixth year, currently brings a group of innercity youth in their late-high school/early collegiate years together in a program that meets twice-a- week for 30 weeks and features life skill training, a hot meal, and golf lessons from Michigan PGA pros. The sessions, currently held at Marygrove College, teach resume writing, etiquette, conflict resolution and other valuable life skills.
Believe it or not, it’s working. Two young ladies exposed to the possibilities outside their inner-city homes graduated from college last spring and fall. The program has produced nearly 100 college students at schools in Michigan and elsewhere in the east and south. Midnight Golf can always use a little more help with sponsorships, mentoring or other support. Their golf outing on Tuesday, June 26, at Western Golf & Country Club affords an opportunity to get involved in a program that has proven itself a positive influence in the community.

When was the last time you heard some good news about inner-city Michigan kids between 17 and 22? An emerging program involving the Michigan PGA is writing a new and positive story using golf as the vehicle to motivate Michigan kids to succeed at the game, but more importantly, in life.
Then after a catered meal, the pros pass along their passion for golf to young people, many of whom have never been exposed to the game before. In the spring and fall, the golf portion of the program moves outside for work on the practice range and maybe couple of holes before dark. In the summertime, many of the sponsors and mentors in the program invite the Midnight Golfers out to play at their clubs, continuing to show an interest in their development.
A spring-break program formerly called the College Tour is now titled the Road Trip for Success and recently took a group of over 60 Midnight Golfers through the south, visiting the southern colleges, the Atlanta Aquarium, the U-S Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama and then playing on the Alabama Golf Trail.
