Just off the beaten path in Detroit’s northwest suburbs, one of golf’s legends saw the opportunity to create something truly special. In June 2000, with private country club aspirations, Arnold Palmer unveiled Northville Hills Golf Club. Four years later, the course is described by many as one of the top layouts available for public play in the Metro Detroit area. “They had visions of being a private club,” explained Ken Hultz, the General Manager of Northville Hills Golf Club. “But through the development stages, it became clear that this facility would be open to the public. For our guests this transition works out great. We are able to offer this incredible private country club-like facility to the public. "We have set our facility up to give our customers a “member for a day” experience, without monthly dues," Hultz added, We have features such as bag service, shoe service, private lockers, and a personalized attention to detail.” Despite the club’s public designation, Northville Hills offers several annual membership packages. On a 220 acre site complete with native woodlands, protected wetlands and rolling slopes of Michigan heather, Arnold Palmer created a championship layout, as evidenced by its hosting of the U.S. Amateur Qualifying in 2002 as well as other prominent local events. The course can easily be set to play over 7,000 yards, but its design expertise really becomes evident in the unique challenges presented from each of its four sets of tees. The ample and forgiving fairways, undulating and lightning-fast greens, and intricate greenside bunker complexes that are Arnold Palmer’s trademarks provide a complete golf experience with a host of strategic options.The course’s many ponds, lakes and natural wetlands come into play on at least 14 of the holes, adding plenty of drama to the design and aesthetics to the development, as well as an official Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary recognition. Northville Hills’ spacious clubhouse is modeled in a contemporary yet classic style. The impressive building features a full-service golf shop, separate men’s and women’s locker rooms, Palmer’s Grille & Bar which serves lunch and dinner items, as well as full beverage service and elegant banquet, wedding and outing facilities that are complemented by an outdoor terrace offering panoramic views of the golf course. Groups of all sizes are accommodated by the expansive facility, and the course has proven to be a perennial favorite for weddings, corporate outings and tournaments alike. |
There is an allure associated with private golf club membership that few golfers will realize in a lifetime. The concept of having exclusive access to a perfectly conditioned course, its extensive country club facilities, and a golf shop staff that greets you by name, is one that is foreign to most of us. Today however, Michigan’s golfing public is about to discover the appeal.
